One Russian Verb, All Its Forms: A Step-by-Step Breakdown of **писать**
A GoTxt teacher's walkthrough of the Russian verb **писать** — every present-tense form, the past tense, the famous **п** → **ш** trap, and a mini drill to lock it in.
Students often tell me that Russian verbs are "just endings glued to a stem." Then they meet писать — to write — and the stem quietly betrays them. Say я пишу out loud and compare it to the infinitive писать: the с has turned into ш. Nobody warns you. My favourite moment in class is the silence after a student confidently says я писаю — which, sadly, means something else entirely. So today we take one verb, lay every form on the table, and explain why the letters move.

The Present Tense: Where the Stem Changes
The infinitive is писать, but the present tense builds on a different stem: пиш-. This is not a random glitch — it is a consonant shift that happens across many Russian verbs. Learn the pattern once and you will spot it everywhere.
| Person | Russian | English |
|---|---|---|
| Я | пишу | I write |
| Ты | пишешь | you write |
| Он / Она | пишет | he / she writes |
| Мы | пишем | we write |
| Вы | пишете | you write (formal/plural) |
| Они | пишут | they write |
Notice the two odd ones out: я пишу ends in -у, and они пишут ends in -ут. Most verbs take -ю and -ют, so these two forms are worth memorising on day one.
The Past Tense: Gender Does the Work
Here Russian is refreshingly kind. The past tense ignores person completely — it only cares about gender and number. Drop -ть from писать and you get писа-, then add the ending.
| Subject | Russian | English |
|---|---|---|
| Он | писал | he wrote |
| Она | писала | she wrote |
| Оно | писало | it wrote |
| Они / Мы / Вы | писали | they / we / you wrote |
So вчера она писала письмо is perfectly correct, while вчера она пишет письмо is not — the tense marker lives in the ending, not in a helper word.
The Trap: писаю Is Not a Word
Here is the mistake I see most often. Learners transfer the -ю ending from regular verbs onto писать and produce я писаю. It sounds plausible. It is wrong. Worse, писаю resembles a vulgar verb, so a native speaker will either wince or laugh.
| English | Correct | Wrong |
|---|---|---|
| I write | я пишу | я писаю |
| You write | ты пишешь | ты писаешь |
| They write | они пишут | они писают |
The fix is mechanical: whenever you want a present-tense form of писать, start from пиш-, never from пис-.
